Fulbright Senior Scholar Program
Research awards for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months are offered under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (Fulbright Program) for scholars and professionals from countries of the Caribbean and Central America to conduct research in the United States during 2009.
Eligibility and Selection Process
University and college faculty, and professionals are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a minimum master's degree and either three years of university teaching experience or five years of professional experience.
It should be noted that this program is not designed for study toward a graduate degree or for the completion of a doctoral dissertation. Candidates who have not visited the United States for an appreciable period within the past five years will be given preference. Candidates must demonstrate an adequate knowledge of English. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the country from which they apply. Persons holding permanent U.S. visas are not eligible.
Research Topics
Applications will be accepted in all fields, but priority will be given to those in the thematic areas/disciplines listed below:
Sustainable Development: a) education, b) environmental studies, c) urban planning, d) public health/mental health, e) economic growth, trade and business administration, and f) migration.
Democratization: a) governance and institutional strengthening, b) political science/public policy, c) law and administration of justice, and d) civil society/NGO development.
Grant Provisions:
Round-trip economy international airfare for grantee only. A monthly stipend of U.S. $2,500.00-$2,900.00 depending upon locale, and a one-time settling in allowance of $500.00.
A professional allowance will be provided for mterials and professional travel for brief visits to other institutions and or attendance at meetings of importance to the research project. A $400.00 will be provided for grants of three months and $750.00 for grants over three months.
Grantees only will be covered under ECA Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE).
Application
Application forms and guidelines are available from the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section (PAS). Five copies of the completed applications should be submitted to the U.S. Embassy (PAS) by the application deadline of August 1, 2004.
Applicants will be notified of selection or non-selection after December 31, 2004. Grants may take place during any 3-6 month period between July 1- December 31, 2006.
Academic Affiliation
Applicants are strongly advised to arrange their own affiliations. However, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) in Washington, D.C. will assist in arranging or confirming academic affiliations for grantees, issues grant documents, disburses grant funds and provides administrative services.
