U.S. Embassy donates books to two more primary schools

Bridgetown, Barbados, Thursday, October 29, 2009 - The United States Embassy to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean continued its book donations to local primary schools on Thursday by presenting to two more schools in St. Phillip.

Public Affairs Officer Mr. John Roberts presented a set of 50 books each to Reynold Weekes Primary School and St. Martins Mangrove Primary.

Parliamentary Representative for St. Phillip South Adriel Brathwaite joined Mr. Roberts in making the presentations. Brathwaite sought the assistance of the Embassy in making the book donations.

Mr. Roberts told the Principal, staff and students at Reynold Weekes Primary that the Embassy was delighted to be making the book donation. "I am very happy to be here with you this morning to perform what has become one of my favorite duties as an American diplomat," Mr. Roberts said.

He noted that like Barbados, the United States recognized the value of a sound education and being well read was at the core of that education. "We make donations like the one we are doing this morning all across Barbados and in the region because we believe that reading will help you accomplish your dreams," he said.

Brathwaite, a former student of the school, also underscored the importance of reading. "If I had a choice to have riches or to read I would choose reading," he told the students.

Mr. Roberts and Mr. Brathwaite also made a presentation to the staff and students of the St. Martins Mangrove Primary.

The donation consisted of books suited for all form levels at the schools and contained both fiction and non-fiction as well as reference books.
