Press Release

Bridgetown, Barbados, Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - On October 25, 2009, the United States Government provided the Royal St. Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) with a top-class police canine specially trained in narcotics detection and patrol.   This dog, which has trained rigorously with the Tarheel Canine Training Company in the United States over the past three months, will increase the capacity of the RSLPF to detect the flow of illegal drugs to and from the island.

Narcotics trafficking throughout the Eastern Caribbean is a growing challenge and brings with it an increase in crime and violence. The U.S. Government stands firm with its regional partners to reduce the flow of drugs and help provide safety and security to its citizens.

The provision of the narcotics detection canine is part of America's continuing engagement with its Caribbean partners, which will be further strengthened through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative that President Obama announced at the 2009 Summit of the Americas.
