Bridgetown, Barbados, Tuesday, March 10, 2009 – On Thursday March 12th Charge? d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United States of America to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Dr. Brent Hardt presented a special award to women’s advocate Nurse Mary Thompson.

The presentation took place at Thompson’s Belleville office.

The award is in recognition of her being a finalist in this year’s International Women of Courage Award presented by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Thompson, a leading voice in the campaign to stamp out violence against women, was among 80 women from around the world nominated by U.S. Embassies for their work in advancing the rights of women and girls.

Thompson was nominated for her advocacy and leadership in developing infrastructure in Barbados to address the consequences of domestic violence and to educate and protect women from victimization.

In making the presentation Dr. Hardt lauded Nurse Thompson for her work to help disadvantaged women through the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
