U.S. Embassy donates books to two more primary schools

Bridgetown, Barbados, Wednesday, February 25, 2009 – The United States Embassy to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean continued its book donations to local primary schools on Wednesday by presenting to two schools in St. Phillip.

Chargé d’Affaires Dr. Brent Hardt presented a set of 50 books each to Bayley’s Primary School and St. Catherine’s Primary.

At Bayley’s Principal Lorraine Burke along with the school’s head boy and head girl, Regio Lorde and Raquel Mason accepted the donation from Dr. Hardt.

Earlier, the senior U.S. envoy highlighted the importance of reading and noted that “one of the cornerstones of a sound education is the ability to read and to read well.”

He noted he was “to present you with this gift of 50 American children’s books”.

Later in the morning the Principal of St. Catherine’s Primary Ordene King also gratefully accepted a set of books for her pupils from Dr. Hardt at St. Catherine’s Anglican Church where the staff and pupils had gathered for Ash Wednesday Service.

A number of the books presented focused on the lives of prominent African Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr, Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey, in keeping with the celebration of Black History Month.
