Expert on Barbados’ architectural history pays farewell visit to outgoing U.S. Ambassador

Bridgetown, Barbados, Thursday, January 27, 2009 – Professor of Medicine and expert on Barbados’ architectural history Dr. Henry Fraser recently paid a farewell call on outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Mary Ourisman.

Professor Fraser is a noted writer and lecturer, who has authored and / or co-authored some 7 books on architectural history and heritage, presented Ambassador Ourisman with a copy of his updated book Historic Houses of Barbados, which was first published in 1982.

The updated book, which features outstanding photos by Mike Toy, “is designed to show the gains and losses over the last 25 years and to sensitize more Barbadians to the value of our architectural heritage.”

He told the departing envoy that there was an ongoing effort to have historic Bridgetown and its Garrison nominated as a World Heritage Site.

Ambassador Ourisman thanked Professor Fraser for his kind gesture and told him that although she would soon be leaving Barbados, she would continue to look for ways to support his efforts to preserve local culture and heritage through her involvement with the Smithsonian Institution and other organizations in Washington.
