United States low cost carrier JetBlue made its inaugural flight to Barbados on Thursday October 1, 2009.  In a VIP reception to welcome the flight from John F. Kennedy International airport Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean D. Brent Hardt noted that it was always “exciting to see more choices and opportunities for air travelers between the United States and the Eastern Caribbean.”

Chargé Hardt noted that competition has always been a hallmark of American business and added that he was “pleased to see healthy competition in the air services industry increasing in the Eastern Caribbean.”

Chargé Hardt later spoke at an official reception for the airline at the historic George Washington House. He noted that the venue for the event was most appropriate as it highlighted the longstanding relationship between the U.S. and Barbados. As a 19 year old George Washington, the first President of the United States, visited Barbados and stayed at the house which has been refurbished and is now listed as one of Barbados’ historic buildings.
