Fulbright Faculty Development Scholarship

Eastern Caribbean

The Fulbright-LASPAU program, funded by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) , supports graduate study in the United States for professionals who are dedicated to college or university teaching.  The grant competition is open to teachers and professors who are nominated by institutions of higher education in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  Nominees must have outstanding academic and professional qualifications.  Applications can be submitted for study in any field.

CRITERIA CONSIDERED IN THE SELECTION PROCESS
  1. academic record in relation to proposed program of study
  2. professional experience
  3. potential contribution to the sponsoring institution in the Eastern Caribbean
  4. clarity of your study/research objectives
  5. be a citizen and resident of one of the nations to which the Embassy at Bridgetown is accredited, that is Antigua/Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica,  Grenada, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Ideally applicants should have earned a bachelor's degree with upper second class honors or better.  Applicants for doctoral programs should have a master's degree with very good grades.

TERMS OF THE FULBRIGHT-LASPAU GRANT

Fulbright-LASPAU grantees receive a monthly maintenance stipend (which varies according to the cost of living in different locations in the U.S.), a book allowance, health insurance, and round-trip air fare to the U.S.  Funds are also available to cover expenses related to graduate study such as thesis preparation and attendance at professional conferences.  Tuition is covered by the admitting university.  Grantees receive up to two years of funding for master's-level or doctoral-level studies. Candidates for doctoral-level study must already possess a master's degree.

The grant does not provide funding for grantees' family members.  Expenses for dependents are the grantee's responsibility.

CALENDAR

February: Applicants should take the GRE exam. (List LASPAU code 3492 as score recipient
March: Scholarship applications forms are available at the U.S. Embassy, Bridgetown 
May 4th: Last day for institutions to send completed application forms, including required supporting documents to the Public Affairs Section, U.S. Embassy, Bridgetown.  Each application includes a statement of support for the candidate from the sponsoring institution.
Mid to late September: Interviews with candidates in Barbados.
December: Notification of the results of the competition.
January-April: LASPAU sends applications to U.S. academic programs for the selected grantees, negotiating admission.
August-September: Academic programs begin.
